As we near the end of 2018, we love to look at some of the traditions that have taken place over the years. For instance, did you know that you should NEVER have turkey or other poultry on New Year’s Day? Save that for New Year’s EVE and remember the past year; think of what you might have done differently. Poultry is consumed before New Year’s Day, traditionally on New Year’s Eve, because poultry “scratches backward,” so it is great for reminding us to reflect on the past year, including family and friends no longer with us going into the New Year.

On the other hand, pork is traditionally consumed on New Year’s Day because pigs “root forward” and represent living “high on the hog” in the coming year, so it makes sense to think about your future in 2019 on New Year’s Day. A great day for all of your family and friends to get together to feast, watch football, play board games and talk about the coming year – to set your goals for 2019.

It is also tradition, and considered good luck and prosperity in the coming year to include black-eyed peas, collard greens (green cabbage slaw or green leafy veggies), and don’t forget the corn bread with sweet honey butter, the color of gold and a sweet 2019. No New Year’s Day is complete without dessert; why not make a homemade lemon or orange olive oil cake to hoist the New Year in sunshiny warmth?

Whatever you and your loved ones do for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, we wish you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR! May God Bless You and Yours in 2019
