“Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.

“I lied and said I was busy.
I was busy;
but not in the way most people understand.
I was busy taking deeper breaths.
I was busy silencing irrational thoughts.
I was busy calming a racing heart.
I was busy telling myself I am okay.
Sometimes, this is my busy –
and I will not apologize for it.”

Presidents’ Day
Selected by Marynance

The third Monday of every February, Presidents’ Day, is a federal holiday,
and many government institutions close.
The day was originally established in the 1880s
to honor President George Washington on his birthdate, February 22.
It later became viewed as a time to recognize all presidents
after it was moved to a Monday as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act
which took effect in 1971.
The observed federal holiday is actually called “Washington’s Birthday.”
Neither Congress nor the President has ever stipulated
that the name of the holiday observed as Washington’s Birthday
be changed to Presidents’ Day.
Additionally, Congress has never declared a national holiday
binding in all states and each state decides its own legal holidays.
This is why there are some calendar discrepancies when it comes to this holiday.

Thoughts for Sunday, February 10, 2019
Selected by Marynance

“There is a magic, a power,
in the names we’ve given the days of the week.
It’s archetypal, in some deeply beautiful way.
They have a meaning and a power to them
we may not fully understand,
but perhaps some of our ancestors did,
because they named them
after the gods and goddesses of their times….
The days of the week
were named after the sun, moon, and the five planets
known thousands of years ago,
and named after gods and goddesses of Greece
and Rome and Scandinavia.
Each one represents a different force,
and reflecting on that force throughout the day
can be useful, even powerful.”

Sunday is of course named for the Sun.
It is a perfect day for rejuvenation.
Relax, get outside if the weather is good.
Have a day of rest during the week —
even God needed a day of rest!
It’s a good day for family and friends,
a day of sunny dispositions.

“Saturday is Saturn’s Day (we’re back to the Roman gods).
As Jupiter is associated with expansion,
Saturn is associated with contraction.
A good day to complete things,
take care of details.

Saturn is also ruler of Capricorn,
the sign associated with accomplishment and mastery.
This is a good day to remember to focus on your dreams,
and take another step
toward becoming a master of your life.”

Friday — or vendredi in French — is Venus Day.
The English word is named after Frigga,
a Germanic version of Venus.
Celebrate the feminine,
the compassion and vision of womankind.
Go to someplace beautiful.

No wonder Friday night is date night!
Love relationships can bloom.
It’s also great for creative expression and settling difficulties.
It’s a day of love.

Thursday is Thor’s Day — or jeudi in French — Jupiter Day.
An expansive day,
a day of growth, creativity, positive encounters.
A good day for meetings.
(I always try to schedule my meetings on Wednesday or Thursday.
And never on Monday!)

Tuesday is Mars’s Day.
It’s interesting that in English,
some of the days are named after
Norse or Germanic gods and goddesses.
Tuesday is named for Tiu,
the Old English translation of Mars.
Latin languages use the Roman names.
In French, Tuesday is mardi
(martes in Spanish, martedì in Italian) — Mars Day.
Now this is a good day to start a workweek!

You have the power and energy of Mars behind you.
It’s great for action in the world, and launching creative ideas —
just avoid some people’s tendencies to get into conflicts
when there’s an excess of Mars energy,
too much testosterone.

Monday is Moon Day.
It’s the worst day of the week, in my opinion,
to start a workweek.
The Moon has always been associated with emotions,
and Monday is often emotional,
a great day for reflection and quiet.
It can be a day of intuitive breakthroughs and discovery.

Take a break sometime on a Moonday.
Try to work as little as possible.
Get in a hot tub or take a hot bath in the evening.
Look at the moon for a while.
It might have some messages for you,
spoken so quietly…

Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did not see his shadow on Saturday,
predicting spring will arrive early this year.
It is good news as the Midwest and East Coast recovered
from this week’s dangerous polar vortex and freezing cold temperatures.

The festivities have their origin in a German legend that says if a furry rodent
casts a shadow on February 2, winter continues. If not, spring comes early.
This is the 133rd year Punxsutawney Phil has given his prediction.

“Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles;
Cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances.
Courage breeds creativity;
Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it.
Cowardice asks the question, is it safe?
Expediency asks the question, is it politic?
Vanity asks the question, is it popular?
But conscience ask the question, is it right?
And there comes a time
when we must take a position that is neither safe,
nor politic, nor popular,
but one must take it because it is right.”

“You can’t really compare people.
That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned,

really stops you from becoming who you are.”

“Some stories don’t have a clear beginning,
middle and end.
Life is about not knowing,
having to change,
taking the moment and making the best of it,

“The way the snowflakes float like tiny feathers—
there’s an elegance to it.
I could watch for hours.
It’s hypnotic.
It reminds me of the feeling I get
when I stand on the beach,
watching the waves.
I’m mesmerized by the power,
the vastness, and the mysteries of nature.
There’s definitely something holy or divine about it.
I wonder if it’s the same feeling people get
when they enter a church.”

“No human face is exactly the same in its lines on each side,
no leaf perfect in its lobes,
no branch in its symmetry.
All admit irregularity as they imply change;
and to banish imperfection is to destroy expression,

All things are literally better, lovelier,

which have been divinely appointed,
that the law of human life may be Effort,
and the law of human judgment, Mercy.”

Today is celebrated in the Christian tradition as the Feast of the Epiphany.
This Bible story from the Gospel of Matthew regards a group of scholarly foreigners
(often referred to as Wise Men, Magi or Kings) who traveled to visit Jesus after his birth,
bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
In Spanish-speaking communities it is known as Día de los Reyes Magos.

“The star of Bethlehem was a star of hope
that led the wise men to the fulfillment of their expectations,
the success of their expedition.
Nothing in this world
is more fundamental for success in life than hope,
and this star pointed to our only source for true hope:
Jesus Christ.”

allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies,
those transcendent moments of awe
that change forever how we experience life and the world.”

Thoughts for New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2019Thoughts for New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2019 “The chief beauty about time
is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day,

May you live and love with joy in good health.

It only takes a moment to smile.”

“I humbly suggest that you rate the coming year by this standard:
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
